Export an XML node tree as JSON

Represent XML as explicit ordered JSON nodes.

Before you begin

  • Python 3.12 or newer
What this script changesCreates a new result and refuses overwrite; input is unchanged. DTD/entity declarations are rejected. XML serialization may change whitespace and prefixes and omits comments.

Set up your example

  1. Save the complete code as xml-to-json.py in a working folder.
  2. Save the provided sample files in that same folder; run commands from that folder.

Sample files in this download:

  • types.json
  • sample.json
  • people.json
  • other.json
  • sample.jsonl
  • flat.json
  • sample.xml

Download the ZIP, extract it, and open a terminal inside the extracted folder. The source file is xml-to-json.py.

Run the script

Run command
python "xml-to-json.py" --input "sample.xml" --output "tree.json"

If your system uses python3 instead of python, use that command for Python examples. Keep paths containing spaces in quotes. Required inputs and optional settings are described in the code and setup steps.

What to expect

Represent XML as explicit ordered JSON nodes. The root catalog has two ordered book children.

How it works

  1. Local UTF-8 input is limited to 10 MiB and held in memory.
  2. tag, attributes, text, tail, and children preserve the parsed tree structure without guessing application-specific mappings.
  3. The root catalog has two ordered book children.

Make it your own

--input

Select another small DTD-free XML document.

Adapt the processing

Edit node to discard whitespace-only text and tail when formatting whitespace is irrelevant.

Change one setting at a time, run it again on sample data, and compare the output. The customization guide walks through this process.

If something goes wrong

The output is verbose.

Explicit nodes retain ordered and mixed-content structure rather than collapsing repeated tag names.

The destination already exists.

Choose a new --output path. The script deliberately refuses to replace an existing result.
