Decode URL query pairs into a table

Export decoded query parameters while preserving duplicates and blanks.

Before you begin

  • Python 3.12 or newer
What this script changesRuns offline and only creates its result file.

Set up your example

  1. Save the complete code as url-query-table.py in a working folder.
  2. Save the provided sample files in that same folder; run commands from that folder.

Sample files in this download:

  • urls.txt
  • sample.txt
  • data.json
  • page1.json
  • page2.json
  • robots.txt
  • ips.txt

Download the ZIP, extract it, and open a terminal inside the extracted folder. The source file is url-query-table.py.

Run the script

Run command
python "url-query-table.py" --url "https://example.com/?tag=python&tag=beginner&empty=" --output "query-pairs.json"

If your system uses python3 instead of python, use that command for Python examples. Keep paths containing spaces in quotes. Required inputs and optional settings are described in the code and setup steps.

What to expect

Export decoded query parameters while preserving duplicates and blanks. The result contains two tag rows and one empty-value row.

How it works

  1. The command names every destination explicitly and refuses an existing output.
  2. parse_qsl returns pairs rather than a dictionary, so repeated keys are not collapsed.
  3. The result contains two tag rows and one empty-value row.

Make it your own

--url

Paste another http(s) URL to inspect its query offline.

Adapt the processing

Edit main's records to group duplicate keys into lists if that fits your downstream use.

Change one setting at a time, run it again on sample data, and compare the output. The customization guide walks through this process.

If something goes wrong

Duplicate keys appear more than once.

This is intentional; repeated parameters can carry distinct ordered values.

The destination already exists.

Choose a new --output path. The script deliberately refuses to replace an existing result.
