Normalize a URL without making a request

Normalize host case, default ports, and an empty URL path offline.

Before you begin

  • Python 3.12 or newer
What this script changesRuns offline and only creates its result file.

Set up your example

  1. Save the complete code as url-normalize.py in a working folder.
  2. Save the provided sample files in that same folder; run commands from that folder.

Sample files in this download:

  • urls.txt
  • sample.txt
  • data.json
  • page1.json
  • page2.json
  • robots.txt
  • ips.txt

Download the ZIP, extract it, and open a terminal inside the extracted folder. The source file is url-normalize.py.

Run the script

Run command
python "url-normalize.py" --url "https://EXAMPLE.com:443/tools?q=code#start" --drop-fragment --output "normalized.json"

If your system uses python3 instead of python, use that command for Python examples. Keep paths containing spaces in quotes. Required inputs and optional settings are described in the code and setup steps.

What to expect

Normalize host case, default ports, and an empty URL path offline. The example becomes https://example.com/tools?q=code.

How it works

  1. The command names every destination explicitly and refuses an existing output.
  2. Query ordering and percent encoding stay unchanged; the tool does not claim all equivalent URLs have one canonical representation.
  3. The example becomes https://example.com/tools?q=code.

Make it your own

--drop-fragment

Omit --drop-fragment to preserve the anchor.

Adapt the processing

Edit main's normalization rules to match a specific site's documented URL conventions.

Change one setting at a time, run it again on sample data, and compare the output. The customization guide walks through this process.

If something goes wrong

A credential-bearing URL is rejected.

Remove embedded credentials; this tool accepts ordinary http(s) URLs only.

The destination already exists.

Choose a new --output path. The script deliberately refuses to replace an existing result.
