Before you begin
- Python 3.12 or newer
Set up your example
- Save the complete code as python-type-hint-audit.py in a working folder.
- Save the provided sample files in that same folder; run commands from that folder.
Sample files in this download:
- sample.py
Download the ZIP, extract it, and open a terminal inside the extracted folder. The source file is python-type-hint-audit.py.
Run the script
python "python-type-hint-audit.py" --source "sample.py" --output "analysis.json"If your system uses python3 instead of python, use that command for Python examples. Keep paths containing spaces in quotes. Required inputs and optional settings are described in the code and setup steps.
What to expect
Report functions with missing parameter or return annotations. greet passes while add lacks annotations for a, b, and its return.

How it works
- The program parses source syntax without importing or executing it; per-file parse failures become error records.
- self and cls are exempt from parameter checks; annotation presence is checked without validating type semantics.
- greet passes while add lacks annotations for a, b, and its return.
Make it your own
--source
Use --source with a Python file or directory; directory mode skips common dependency and hidden folders.
Adapt the processing
Edit analyze's exemptions if your project annotates self and cls explicitly.
Change one setting at a time, run it again on sample data, and compare the output. The customization guide walks through this process.
If something goes wrong
A nonsensical annotation passes.
Presence checking is not type checking; annotations are never evaluated here.
The destination already exists.
Choose a new --output path. The script deliberately refuses to replace an existing result.
