Before you begin
- Python 3.12 or newer
Set up your example
- Save the complete code as python-doctest-extract.py in a working folder.
- Save the provided sample files in that same folder; run commands from that folder.
Sample files in this download:
- sample.py
Download the ZIP, extract it, and open a terminal inside the extracted folder. The source file is python-doctest-extract.py.
Run the script
python "python-doctest-extract.py" --source "sample.py" --output "analysis.json"If your system uses python3 instead of python, use that command for Python examples. Keep paths containing spaces in quotes. Required inputs and optional settings are described in the code and setup steps.
What to expect
Export doctest prompts and expected output from docstrings. The fixture extracts greet('Ada') with expected output 'Hello Ada'.

How it works
- The program parses source syntax without importing or executing it; per-file parse failures become error records.
- Doctest parsing recognizes >>> examples but never executes them; example line numbers are relative to cleaned docstrings.
- The fixture extracts greet('Ada') with expected output 'Hello Ada'.
Make it your own
--source
Use --source with a Python file or directory; directory mode skips common dependency and hidden folders.
Adapt the processing
Edit analyze's result to group examples under each owner rather than a flat list.
Change one setting at a time, run it again on sample data, and compare the output. The customization guide walks through this process.
If something goes wrong
An example fails doctest parsing.
Check prompt indentation and expected-output formatting in the source docstring.
The destination already exists.
Choose a new --output path. The script deliberately refuses to replace an existing result.
