Before you begin
- Python 3.12 or newer
Set up your example
- Save the complete code as python-call-map.py in a working folder.
- Save the provided sample files in that same folder; run commands from that folder.
Sample files in this download:
- sample.py
Download the ZIP, extract it, and open a terminal inside the extracted folder. The source file is python-call-map.py.
Run the script
python "python-call-map.py" --source "sample.py" --output "analysis.json"If your system uses python3 instead of python, use that command for Python examples. Keep paths containing spaces in quotes. Required inputs and optional settings are described in the code and setup steps.
What to expect
List call expressions inside each function's own scope. Tool.run calls greet and remember calls items.append.

How it works
- The program parses source syntax without importing or executing it; per-file parse failures become error records.
- Names such as items.append describe syntax rather than resolved runtime targets; nested functions get their own entries.
- Tool.run calls greet and remember calls items.append.
Make it your own
--source
Use --source with a Python file or directory; directory mode skips common dependency and hidden folders.
Adapt the processing
Edit analyze to aggregate identical expression labels into call counts.
Change one setting at a time, run it again on sample data, and compare the output. The customization guide walks through this process.
If something goes wrong
A method target is unresolved.
Static syntax alone does not identify the runtime object behind an attribute.
The destination already exists.
Choose a new --output path. The script deliberately refuses to replace an existing result.
