Convert basic Markdown to plain text

Remove common inline Markdown and heading syntax for a readable text copy.

Before you begin

  • Python 3.12+
What this script changesReads the chosen input and creates a new result. Existing outputs are refused. Reports can contain source names or text, so store them appropriately.

Set up your example

  1. Save the complete code as markdown-readable-text.py.
  2. Open a terminal in the folder containing the script.
  3. Create the supplied sample files at the shown relative paths.

Sample files in this download:

  • input.md

Download the ZIP, extract it, and open a terminal inside the extracted folder. The source file is markdown-readable-text.py.

Run the script

Run command
python markdown-readable-text.py --input "input.md" --output "report.txt"

If your system uses python3 instead of python, use that command for Python examples. Keep paths containing spaces in quotes. Required inputs and optional settings are described in the code and setup steps.

What to expect

The sample loses # and ## heading markers, retaining Guide, Setup, Usage, and their body text.

Open source as plain text · Download source and sample files

How it works

  1. Handles common inline links, images, heading prefixes, code ticks, and bold delimiters.
  2. Use --input for a Markdown source and --output for a new .txt file.
  3. This is a lightweight readable-text transformation; complex Markdown extensions are not fully parsed.

Make it your own

Change the task behavior

Edit the Image replacement text or remove that substitution to choose how image descriptions appear.

Choose a source

Change --input in the run command to select your own source for convert basic markdown to plain text.

Choose a destination

Change --output to a new path. The write_text(), fresh_dir(), and save_pdf() helpers refuse existing outputs.

Change one setting at a time, run it again on sample data, and compare the output. The customization guide walks through this process.

If something goes wrong

The chosen source cannot be read.

Check the source path, quote paths with spaces, and confirm the file or folder is readable.

The output already exists.

Use a new --output path; existing results are deliberately preserved.

A task-specific argument is rejected.

Run python markdown-readable-text.py --help, then compare the options with the complete example command and supplied sample format.
