Sort a JSON record array

Sort a top-level object array by one consistently typed field.

Before you begin

  • Python 3.12 or newer
What this script changesCreates a new result and refuses overwrite; input is unchanged. Nonstandard NaN/Infinity JSON is rejected; nested documents can exceed the interpreter recursion limit.

Set up your example

  1. Save the complete code as json-sort-array.py in a working folder.
  2. Save the provided sample files in that same folder; run commands from that folder.

Sample files in this download:

  • types.json
  • sample.json
  • people.json
  • other.json
  • sample.jsonl
  • flat.json
  • sample.xml

Download the ZIP, extract it, and open a terminal inside the extracted folder. The source file is json-sort-array.py.

Run the script

Run command
python "json-sort-array.py" --input "people.json" --field "score" --descending --output "sorted.json"

If your system uses python3 instead of python, use that command for Python examples. Keep paths containing spaces in quotes. Required inputs and optional settings are described in the code and setup steps.

What to expect

Sort a top-level object array by one consistently typed field. The two Ada score-8 records precede Bo's score-5 record.

How it works

  1. Local UTF-8 input is limited to 10 MiB and held in memory.
  2. Native numeric or text ordering is stable, so equal values retain input order.
  3. The two Ada score-8 records precede Bo's score-5 record.

Make it your own

--descending

Omit --descending for ascending order.

Adapt the processing

Edit main's key lambda to return a tuple for a second sort field.

Change one setting at a time, run it again on sample data, and compare the output. The customization guide walks through this process.

If something goes wrong

Values cannot be compared.

Use comparable values in the field; mixed null/text/numbers require an explicit sorting rule.

The destination already exists.

Choose a new --output path. The script deliberately refuses to replace an existing result.
