Before you begin
- Python 3.12 or newer
Set up your example
- Save the complete code as json-deduplicate-array.py in a working folder.
- Save the provided sample files in that same folder; run commands from that folder.
Sample files in this download:
- types.json
- sample.json
- people.json
- other.json
- sample.jsonl
- flat.json
- sample.xml
Download the ZIP, extract it, and open a terminal inside the extracted folder. The source file is json-deduplicate-array.py.
Run the script
python "json-deduplicate-array.py" --input "people.json" --output "unique.json"If your system uses python3 instead of python, use that command for Python examples. Keep paths containing spaces in quotes. Required inputs and optional settings are described in the code and setup steps.
What to expect
Retain the first copy of every distinct serialized JSON array value. The duplicate Ada record disappears and two people remain.

How it works
- Local UTF-8 input is limited to 10 MiB and held in memory.
- Sorted object keys ignore object-key ordering; numeric 1 and 1.0 keep different serialized signatures.
- The duplicate Ada record disappears and two people remain.
Make it your own
--input
Use another JSON array, including mixed JSON types.
Adapt the processing
Edit main's signature to serialize a selected identity field instead of the whole record.
Change one setting at a time, run it again on sample data, and compare the output. The customization guide walks through this process.
If something goes wrong
Records sharing a name remain.
Whole-record content determines identity; select a field signature only when that is intended.
The destination already exists.
Choose a new --output path. The script deliberately refuses to replace an existing result.
