Before you begin
- Python 3.12 or newer
Set up your example
- Save the complete code as json-check-record-types.py in a working folder.
- Save the provided sample files in that same folder; run commands from that folder.
Sample files in this download:
- types.json
- sample.json
- people.json
- other.json
- sample.jsonl
- flat.json
- sample.xml
Download the ZIP, extract it, and open a terminal inside the extracted folder. The source file is json-check-record-types.py.
Run the script
python "json-check-record-types.py" --input "people.json" --types-file "types.json" --output "issues.json"If your system uses python3 instead of python, use that command for Python examples. Keep paths containing spaces in quotes. Required inputs and optional settings are described in the code and setup steps.
What to expect
Find missing fields and wrong top-level value types in a record array. A types.json mapping name to string and score to integer yields no sample issues.

How it works
- Local UTF-8 input is limited to 10 MiB and held in memory.
- Supported names are string, number, integer, boolean, array, object, null. This is a small checker, not JSON Schema.
- A types.json mapping name to string and score to integer yields no sample issues.
Make it your own
--types-file
Edit types.json to describe the fields your import requires.
Adapt the processing
Add a named predicate to checks for a domain-specific rule.
Change one setting at a time, run it again on sample data, and compare the output. The customization guide walks through this process.
If something goes wrong
The type name is unsupported.
Use one of the supported simple names; nested schemas are not accepted.
The destination already exists.
Choose a new --output path. The script deliberately refuses to replace an existing result.
