Before you begin
- Python 3.12 or newer
Set up your example
- Save the complete code as http-response-timing.py in a working folder.
- Save the provided sample files in that same folder; run commands from that folder.
- For the provided local HTTP examples, open another terminal in this folder and run: python -m http.server 8765 --bind 127.0.0.1. Keep it running while using the tool.
Sample files in this download:
- urls.txt
- sample.txt
- data.json
- page1.json
- page2.json
- robots.txt
- ips.txt
Download the ZIP, extract it, and open a terminal inside the extracted folder. The source file is http-response-timing.py.
Run the script
python "http-response-timing.py" --url "http://127.0.0.1:8765/sample.txt" --count 3 --output "timing.json"If your system uses python3 instead of python, use that command for Python examples. Keep paths containing spaces in quotes. Required inputs and optional settings are described in the code and setup steps.
What to expect
Measure several complete HEAD-request elapsed times and their mean. The fixture produces three measured durations; exact values vary.

How it works
- The command names every destination explicitly and refuses an existing output.
- Timing includes connection setup, redirects, and response headers, rather than download throughput.
- The fixture produces three measured durations; exact values vary.
Make it your own
--count
Use --count 5 for five measurements, up to ten.
Adapt the processing
Edit main's output to compute min and max from the measurements.
Change one setting at a time, run it again on sample data, and compare the output. The customization guide walks through this process.
If something goes wrong
A timing run stops on connection failure.
Check the server and --timeout; status errors still have timings but connection errors stop this tool.
The destination already exists.
Choose a new --output path. The script deliberately refuses to replace an existing result.
