Before you begin
- Python 3.12 or newer
Set up your example
- Save the complete code as http-header-snapshot.py in a working folder.
- Save the provided sample files in that same folder; run commands from that folder.
- For the provided local HTTP examples, open another terminal in this folder and run: python -m http.server 8765 --bind 127.0.0.1. Keep it running while using the tool.
Sample files in this download:
- urls.txt
- sample.txt
- data.json
- page1.json
- page2.json
- robots.txt
- ips.txt
Download the ZIP, extract it, and open a terminal inside the extracted folder. The source file is http-header-snapshot.py.
Run the script
python "http-header-snapshot.py" --url "http://127.0.0.1:8765/sample.txt" --output "headers.json"If your system uses python3 instead of python, use that command for Python examples. Keep paths containing spaces in quotes. Required inputs and optional settings are described in the code and setup steps.
What to expect
Save response headers and status without saving the body. The local result includes content-type, content-length, and last-modified.

How it works
- The command names every destination explicitly and refuses an existing output.
- Header names are normalized to lowercase; repeated fields are represented as delivered by the header mapping.
- The local result includes content-type, content-length, and last-modified.
Make it your own
--url
Change --url to an endpoint whose headers you need to inspect.
Adapt the processing
Edit main to select only named header keys if a compact snapshot is desired.
Change one setting at a time, run it again on sample data, and compare the output. The customization guide walks through this process.
If something goes wrong
A header appears absent.
Headers are server-controlled; check lowercase names and the final URL after redirection.
The destination already exists.
Choose a new --output path. The script deliberately refuses to replace an existing result.
