Before you begin
- Python 3.12 or newer
Set up your example
- Save the complete code as eml-address-list.py in a working folder.
- Save the provided sample files in that same folder; run commands from that folder.
Sample files in this download:
- sample.eml
- sample.mbox
- body.txt
- note.txt
Download the ZIP, extract it, and open a terminal inside the extracted folder. The source file is eml-address-list.py.
Run the script
python "eml-address-list.py" --input "sample.eml" --output "addresses.json"If your system uses python3 instead of python, use that command for Python examples. Keep paths containing spaces in quotes. Required inputs and optional settings are described in the code and setup steps.
What to expect
Separate display names and addresses from sender and recipient headers. Ada, Bo, and Cy appear under from, to, and cc.

How it works
- All messages are read from local files; no SMTP, browser, or email-service connection is used.
- Each address retains its originating header; absent Bcc does not prove a message had no hidden recipients.
- Ada, Bo, and Cy appear under from, to, and cc.
Make it your own
--input
Choose a saved message whose recipient headers you need to inspect.
Adapt the processing
Edit main's header tuple to include a specific additional address-bearing header.
Change one setting at a time, run it again on sample data, and compare the output. The customization guide walks through this process.
If something goes wrong
A hidden recipient is missing.
Bcc is often absent from delivered mail; local headers cannot reconstruct it.
The destination already exists.
Choose a new --output path. The script deliberately refuses to replace an existing result.
