Before you begin
- Python 3.12 or newer
Set up your example
- Save the complete code as csv-redact-columns.py in a working folder.
- Save the provided sample files in that same folder; run commands from that folder.
Sample files in this download:
- sample.csv
- lookup.csv
- second.csv
- wide.csv
- numbers.csv
- sample.tsv
Download the ZIP, extract it, and open a terminal inside the extracted folder. The source file is csv-redact-columns.py.
Run the script
python "csv-redact-columns.py" --input "sample.csv" --columns "name" --output "masked.csv"If your system uses python3 instead of python, use that command for Python examples. Keep paths containing spaces in quotes. Required inputs and optional settings are described in the code and setup steps.
What to expect
Replace every value in selected columns with a fixed mask. All three names become [REDACTED], while amounts remain available.

How it works
- read_csv checks unique headers and row widths before processing.
- Entire selected cells are replaced, including blanks; other columns are copied exactly.
- All three names become [REDACTED], while amounts remain available.
Make it your own
--mask
Use --mask hidden to change the replacement text.
Adapt the processing
Edit the dictionary condition to preserve blank values when masking.
Change one setting at a time, run it again on sample data, and compare the output. The customization guide walks through this process.
If something goes wrong
Sensitive text remains in other fields.
List every relevant column; this is column masking, not a general anonymization system.
The destination already exists.
Choose a new --output path. The script deliberately refuses to replace an existing result.
